“I think mentoring is a great service for a young person to access. This is where children can relate on a friendly basis instead of in a clinical base. Children open up more to mentors with confidence and manage their emotions better. Engaging with clinical type therapy does not always go down that well with young people. Firstly they feel there is something wrong with them and often they don’t want to see them. If they do get to engage, they take ages to open up and also feel worried that their information will get shared.”

They are able to respond quickly to referrals and engage young people with a diverse group of mentors who are skilled and able to focus whilst representing the needs of the young person in and out of school.

They have been flexible in their style , some specialists have acted as learning mentors or social and emotional mentors. One of the mentors was able to highlight key characteristics of a young person to the carers to enable their relationship to improve.
